If you are a sendmail user then the sendmail.net test site is advertising for testers for the soon to be launched 'Sender ID'.
You need to be at the latest version of sendmail and download a small patch program. Whether or not you agree with the solution I think that it is worth trying.
I hope that initiatives like this will finally turn the tide against spam and prove that my article is wrong.
