Principles of LDAP Schema Design is a good article describing how to apply database design techniques to LDAP.
It is quite good for finding out just what LDAP can do rather than what LDAP is used for (in conjunction with whatever other software). And given the number of service providers and software products that can now use LDAP it is particularly usefule for creating data related integrations.
